SAFERsleep System pioneered in New Zealand, now in the United Kingdom

United Kingdom

Safer Sleep has been in the United Kingdom since 2008.

The company installed its first two sites in the United Kingdom as part of study into methods to reduce anaesthetic drug error. The study is sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation and the Royal College of Anaesthetists and was published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia 105(3)289-96(2010). Six operating rooms have been installed, five at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, England and one at Wrexham Hospital, North Wales.

In 2009 Papworth Hospital, the largest specialist cardiothoracic hospital in the UK, purchased the SAFERsleep System for its operating theatre suites.

The company has an office in Cambridge and a team are employed to support the sales and marketing activities in the United Kingdom.

New Zealand

Safer Sleep was first installed at Greenlane Hospital, Auckland in 1998. The SAFERsleep System is now installed in both private and public hospitals in New Zealand.

The product was developed by Safer Sleep Limited over several years in collaboration between the clinical staff at Greenlane Hospital and University of Auckland research team led by Prof Alan Merry.

The first commercial sale was to a large private hospital in Auckland Mercy Ascot Hospital. Since then the SAFERsleep System has been installed in a number of other private facilities including the Southern Cross Private Hospitals - North Harbour and Brightside Hospital as well as Laparoscopy Auckland, Gillies Hospital and the Mobile Surgical Bus that provides surgical services to rural hospitals across New Zealand.

New Zealand public hospitals have also purchased the SAFERsleep System including the largest public hospital  in the south pacific Auckland City Hospital, and the two hospitals in Waitemata District Health Board - North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals.
